Firefox Add On Test Tools: Accessibility Testing

This week's Firefox add on test tools are all about accessibility testing. I'll cover the Firefox Accessibility Extension, WAT Q/A Extension, and Qompliance. Each are rich in features and provide reports and references.

The Firefox Accessibility Extension, available here, comes from the Illinois Center for Information Technology and Web Accessibility (iCITA) and helps test web resources for functional accessibility features based on the iCITA HTML Best Practices. It provides a comprehensive toolbar with controls for Reports, Navigation, Text Equivalent, Scripting, Style, Validators, Tools, Keyboards and Options.

The second tool is called the WAT Q/A Extension. It's available here, and it is designed to assist manual testing of web pages and web applications. It provides a process for collecting data and producing reports on issues related to Guidelines and Standards. It has several Accessibility Guidelines and Standards sets preloaded: Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 1.0, WCAG 2.0 and Section 508. These sets can be customized by adding custom test procedures. In addition new Guidelines and Standards can be added as XML files. I particularly like the ability to pick which tests you want run as shown in the panel to the left.

The third Firefox add on test tool is called Qompliance and is available here. Qompliance gives you direct access to Deque's Worldspace, a Web content Accessibility tool. This tool automates testing for Accessibility (Section 508 and WCAG), Privacy, Quality, and Security. Unlike the other two tools, you access Qompliance by clicking on an icon in the bottom right of the Firefox browser. Here's a sample report using Qompliance (click on the image to enlarge):

These are must-have test tools for anyone doing accessibility testing.
